Growing Up Online

I already knew:
  1. Now, people spend most time online.
  2. It is sometimes easier to contact someone through a text message, Facebook or a phone call even if you are in the same house.
  3. The internet can help you feel like you are someone else.
  4. It is almost impossible to control what kids do online.
  5. Once something is on the internet there is no turning back.
  6. Kids refuse to give their passwords to their parents, they feel it is a violation to their privacy.
  7. People have different relationships online.
  8. Most people like to have a lot of friends on Facebook, even though they do not know most of them.
  9. 90% of teenagers are online.
  10. Kids use the internet for plagiarism and things like Spark notes.
  11. Now a days because of the internet people multitask more.
  12. Teens are bigger experts using new technologies than adults.
  13. There are some obvious predators that people keep away, but others are like any other person.
  14. Cyber-bullying can lead to suicide.
  15. People lie about their age online.
What surprised me:
  1. Kids concentrate even less now a days.
  2. Parent-Child relationships are much weaker there is much less "family time".
  3. Kids friend people that they do not know, even though it is dangerous.
  4. People feel like there is no other things to do than spend time online.
  5. Stalkers are more common now.
  6. Some people even aware of the dangers are very irresponsible online, ie. they friend people they don't know on Facebook.
Different now:
  1. Myspace is no longer popular.
  2. People use Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Youtube.
  3. Internet Explorer is not a main browser any more.
  4. I pods are way thinner now and people use I touches more, not mp3.
  5. Computers are used in school instead of notebooks.
  6. There are many more Facebook users.
  7. People are less interested in adding people they don't know.
  8. Picture and Video quality is better.
  9. Layouts are different (ie. youtube, Facebook, etc.)
  10. Internet is faster.
  11. Laptops and smaller/thinner computers are more common.
What topic in the video does not relate to your experiences?

In the video many girls said that they competed to see who had more friends on Facebook, and they added random people that they didn't know. I've never done that. I think that when you are online it is important to know the people you socialize with, and take precautions. If you add someone that you don't know as a friend they can find out information about you, abuse you, stalk you or even kidnap you. I never add people that I don't know, just to be safe.

What are the biggest benefits of being online?

I have many friends that have moved away or that live in other countries and being online helps me so I can communicate with them and it is faster and easier. Online I can also do many things that I love. There are many webpages that are for editing pictures and listening to music. Others help me with school like the videos in Khan Academy. It is also beneficial to be able to research things for school like about certain periods in history, for projects or homework.

What topic did you most strongly identify with?

I felt identified with the fact that kids are online most of the time. Even though I also do other things I do many things online. I chat with my friends, Skype with the member of my family that don't live here or with my friends, I have a tumblr. Mostly, though, I listen to music, and I watch videos on youtube.

Swiss School

Sustainability Management School:

  • Business school based totally on sustainability
  • It is the first one of its kind in Europe
  • It is in Gland, Switzerland
  • It is in the building of the international union for the conservation of nature
  • Teaches how to bring sustainability to life in the day to day work.
  • Students go into many functions and apply sustainability into what they do, be it marketing, finance etc.
  • It offers both the Bachelors and the Masters of business administration and sustainability management
Sustainable consumption and production: a greener world:
  • transport, buildings, food, drink, waste, and CO2 emissions  are responsible for about 80% of the worlds environmental impact
  • we have to change our ways of producing and consuming or by 2050 we will need twice of earths surface to absorb the waste and CO2 produced.
  • there are products that are better it can be because they use less resources or require less energy when used or are recyclable, or reusable.
  • Encouraging citizens to be responsible in their every day consumption and pushing industries to strive for more services that are friendly to the environment we can make a change.
Arizona State University: Graduation Ceremony:
  • Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard are attempting to fly across america in an airplane powered only with solar pannels
  • difficulties are opportunities
  • It you only use the knowledge you have gained throughout these years of your life you will never be more successful than other people.
  • If you want to be more successful you have to go beyond knowledge into exploration
  • If you do this you will have a mind open enough to create and this is important because the world in order to have a brighter and better future needs creators and people who can change things who can fight poverty and fight for human rights but also who can create clean technology to achieve sustainability.
An Inconvenient truth:
  • the 10 hottest years in history have been within the last 14 years the hottest was 2005
  • we are causing global warming
  • it is a moral issue
  • the temperature increases is causing bigger, and stronger storms
  • Our homes and ability to live is at stake
  • the attic is melting faster
Assignment
  1. We can apply sustainable consumption here in many different ways. For one we can buy organic products because they were made with less or no fertilizers and chemicals so they did not harm the soil like the ones that were grown using chemicals and fertilizers. We can also buy local products because less energy is used in the transportation, than the amount used with products that are imported. Another thing we can do is recycle and reuse things.
  2. At Starbucks there are two main things going on that affect the environment in a positive way. First of all they are working on a project to make all their cups recyclable. They have stores in some cities where there is no recycling like Chicago. What they do is: they place trash-cans for the paper cups in the stores so the customer can throw out the cups there. Then they take out the trash like they normally do but these are picked up by trucks that take them to a paper mill and from there they are put in a pulper. Then that pulp is later used to make paper. So through recycling they can reduce their negative impact on the environment. Another thing they are doing is: helping the farmers. They help them run the business and with their crops, to ensure better quality of their products and less negative impact on the environment. All of this helps to minimize the environmental footprint that Starbucks makes.

Forms and Flubaroo

I created a Sample quiz (link) using Google forms.

Here is the process:
1. Go to http://drive.google.com/

2. Click on the orange thing that says CREATE and then on the green sheet that says Form.

3. A screen like this will appear.
Choose a title and choose the theme, then click OK.

4. You can write a quiz description if you want to, if not then just leave the space blank.

4.1. Where it says Question Title    Untitled Question   write your question.
4.2. Then choose the question type.
4.3. For all except for text and paragraph text choose what the options are.
4.4. Then press Done to finish with that question. And start on another one by pressing Add Item

5. When you are done press Choose Response Destination at the top left.
5.1. Make sure to create a new spreadsheet and press CREATE

6. Then press send form at the bottom and send it to whoever you want to take the quiz.

Today I learned what Google forms are useful for as well as flubaroo. I learned how to create a quiz with Google forms and how to grade it with flubaroo. I was also able to show how I created my quiz.

Social Service - CWW

Monday

On Monday I came to school early very exited to start social service. A couple of weeks before I had signed up for Best Buddies with Sarah, Rachel, and Maria. I really wanted to work with the kids and spend time with them. We left the school a little late because the driver did not have the address of the place. On the way there we got lost but finally found our way to the building. We talked to the man in charge of the Best Buddies project and he told us that we were going to do office work. I was very disappointed but we couldn't do anything about it. Sarah, Rachel and I went to organize some pay checks they had to file, some others organized a closet and the rest had nothing to do. They decided to organize some activities to do with the kids and see if they allowed us to work with them. After we ate some food we came back to school and finished organizing the activities.

Tuesday

The next day I got to school exited because they had told us that we could work with the kids that day. However the woman from the school, in charge of coordinating the activities did not approve it. Because of this half of our group stayed behind at school, while the other half went to the same place as the day before. When we got there they told us that we could do the same thing we had done the day before. Maria, Rachel, Mrs. Denise and I went to organize more files. They had a closet full of them and wanted us to organize them all, but we did not have that much time so we just organized the ones of the 2012. after we were done we ate some snacks and came back to school. Once here we went to lunch and came back and talked the rest of the time.

Wednesday/Thursday

I traveled to Medellin to a doctors appointment.

Friday

The last day I was finally able to work with the kids. The experience was unbelievable and amazing. We went to a school called Cepitin. There I met many great kids including; Cindy, Luis Miguel, Sonia, and Miguel Angel. We worked in groups; Maria, Sarah and I tout them how to make paper airplanes. While the rest drew and worked with play dough. It was great. Then we ate some snacks and talked with them. After that Mrs. Denise read a story and we came back to school. Once here Maria and I came back to class and worked on the journals. Then we went home.

I really enjoyed the social service we did. Mostly on Friday because I loved being with the kids and working with them. It really was a fantastic experience.

Design Project Day 2

Drawings

Juanita, Camila and Claudia;
Our drawings were not so detailed and did not explain so well how the game was to be played.
Isabela;
Her drawing showed the stages, and had more details. It had the most strengths.

The changes we are going to make to combine them are very simple. We are just going to change the aim game because we like the one on the other drawings better.

Design Project Day 1

  • Isabela Munoz, Claudia Beltran and Camila Villamil are my partners.
  • We are making this game for primary school girls and boys. The difficulty level will be medium.
  • Things that make a game successful
    1. Creativity and design (how it looks)
    2. The prizes you win at the end
    3. The cost (cheap)
    4. The topic of the game. What is the goal of the game?
    5. The type and amt. of advertisement made.
    6. Difficulty level
  • Link 1. I thought that the design and the way it was made was very good. It was good quality and creative. I think that the video could have shown what the game does. In other words the advertisement could have been much better.
  • Link 2. I thought that the difficulty level made the game entertaining  It was not very hard but it was not easy either. Also there was a variety of games. I think the prizes and what the final goal was, could have been described more. Also the rules of the games like do you have to win one to play the other or not?
  • Link 3 I think it was really good. It had decorations, it was very well made and it was interesting. The difficulty level was also medium and I think that was cool. I would show the prizes that you win for getting the ball in each hole.
Game Ideas
  1. Maze
  2. Fishing Game
  3. Aim Game
  4. Spinner with dares
  5. Race between two players

Our game is The Race. It includes every other stage but in a race and they are steps.

Fun;
  1. It has a vriety of games
  2. You can play with a friend
  3. It is not too hard and not too easy
  4. Everyone who plays will get a prize
What could go wrong?
  1. People could cheat
  2. Game wreck
  3. Kids getting board
To avoid this things;

  1. Make the rules clear
  2. Make it colorful
  3. Trust kids honesty
  4. Make it with good support

GOOGLE 20% Last Day

Goal:
My goal for this project was to research about, and learn how to do photo editing. I researched about the different types of photo editing, and edited pictures.

Photo editing is basically anything that can be done to a picture when manipulating it. It includes re-sizing  retouching, rotating, color and contrast and anything else whether done in a dark room or a computer.
The page that I used for editing most of my pictures was Pixlr, although I also used Smugmug at the beginning.

Process:
On Day 1:

  • Discovered the definition of photo editing, and what types t there are.
  •  Found some sites for photo editing and chose two to use throughout the project.
On Day 2:
  • Found the difference between professional and non-professional photo editing.
  • Found links of pages for professional as well and non-professional editing.
  • Edited my first picture using Smugmug.
Days 3, 4, 5:
  • Edited pictures using both Smugmug the third day and Pixlr the fourth and fifth days.

Helpful tools:
  • Smugmug and Pixlr were very good, yet I liked Pixlr better, because it had different types (efficient, advanced and playful), and it was free. Smugmug only had a free trial for eight days and not all the tools could be used or where easy to use.
Not helpful tools:
  • The pages professional editing all required an account and were not free. Some had a free trial but were not so easy to use. These include; Corel Paintshop Pro, Photo Ninja, Photoshop Lightroom 4, and Capture nx2. They seem really good but since they had to be purchased to be used I could not use them.
